The relationship between Sensu and Occidental Art Interaction of Japan and Europe The Minimalist

Sensu, which originated in Japan, shocked the Western art world. Western art influenced the sensu as well. Let’s take a closer look at the encounter and interaction between the sensu and the Occidental art world.

The introduction of sensu to the West

Sensu were introduced to the West in the late 16th century. The sensu that were introduced to Europe from Japan were not only practical but were also highly valued for their elaborate and beautiful appearance. Portuguese and Spanish merchant ships imported them from East Asia, such as Japan and China, and they were accepted by the upper class in Europe.

In the 17th century, the sensu became an essential fashion item for women in high society. Sensu became a symbol of the status of the upper class, and they competed with each other for the most luxurious decorations.

Sensu went beyond being a practical tool and became works of art that expressed the dignity of their owners.

The influence of Western art on Sensu

Sensu that were introduced to Europe were influenced by Western paintings and art styles.

Late 17th century to early 18th century:

During the Baroque period (late 17th century to early 18th century), sensu were painted with dramatic and dynamic pictures and patterns.

Mid-18th century:

During the Rococo period (mid-18th century), delicate and elegant pictures and patterns were painted on fan surfaces and richly decorated.

Late 18th century to 19th century:

With the Industrial Revolution, sensu entered the era of mass production as well. From the late 18th century to the 19th century, the production of some sensu was mechanised. Many sensu factories were established in England and France. As a result, they were mass-produced, the price fell, and they became affordable for the middle class. In addition, as the number of fans in circulation increased, the designs of sensu became more diverse.

Late 19th century to early 20th century:

The natural motifs and curvaceous beauty of Art Nouveau began to be seen in sensu from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The Impressionist movement, which flourished during this period, influenced sensu designs as well.

The influence of Sensu on Western art

In France, which has been the centre of art movements, people responded strongly to sensu and were influenced by sensu.

In the mid-19th century, exhibitions of Japanese art in Europe created booms known as Japonésrie and Japonism. The unique style of Japanese art influenced many artists in the West.

Impressionist artists in particular often have works that feature Japan as a theme, and sensu appear as well.

A representative example of this is “La Japonaise” by Claude Monet.

Edgar Degas’ works include several paintings of “Ballerina And Lady With A Fan” and “Dancer with Fan.”
