Zabuton and Tatami mats: The close relationship

Zabuton and Tatami mats The close relationship The Minimalist

It’s a common sight to see zabutons laid on tatami mats in Japanese houses. Zabuton and tatami are closely related.

The unknown connection between Zabuton and Tatami

Tatami is a flexible flooring material, but it becomes even softer and more comfortable to sit on if you place a zabuton on top of it. Both tatami mats and zabutons have the characteristic of being between the ground and people, providing comfort.

It’s believed that ancient thin tatami mats were the primitive form of zabuton. It’s also said that thin tatami mats evolved into today’s thick tatami mats.

In other words, although it’s branched into tatami mats and zabuton today, they originally had the common ancestry. This is an interesting point.
